It’s time again in Denver for a yearly ritual where skiers and snowboarders converge on the Paramount Theater to pay homage to the granddaddy of all ski movie makers: Warren Miller. For 58 years, Miller has been directing and more recently producing ski films, with each year’s skiers, riders, and camera crew going bigger and bigger to top the previous offering. This year’s movie, Children of Winter, is no different.

The loyal fans of Miller’s work know this. Inside the theater, cheers erupt from the seats as presenter Chris Anthony comes out on stage to introduce this year’s menu of winter destinations. This year’s session comes from as far afield as Iceland, Japan, and Miller favorite Cordova, AK. This year, too, Children of Winter went particularly heavy on showing off Colorado’s powder in the form of segments in Crested Butte, Steamboat, and Silverton. The hometown crowd erupts when narrator Jonny Moseley introduces these local spots, and it seems that everyone in the audience is hoping that the intermission break will bring flurries of the white stuff down on 16th Street. Miller’s films have always seemed to be an unofficial start to the season, amping up skiers and boarders for the oncoming snows.

Children of Winter is ski-heavy, but with a decent bit of snowboarding action and even some mountain biking thrown in for good measure. As in recent years, there’s plenty of powder, steep lines, and excellent camera work. Best of all, Miller takes the audience to all the places that they only wish they could shred.
