Are You on The Dean’s List?

Laura Dean, a resident of the Metro Denver area for the past 8 1/2 years, loves to network and connect people. This is why she started The Dean’s List, a weekly email, distributed on Thursdays, that provides a free way for people to share community information. Laura originally started The Dean’s List when she lived in Dallas. Lucky for us, she decided to continue her efforts here in Denver.

I love getting The Dean’s List every week. It provides a diverse mixture of community events, items for sale, business opportunities, fundraising and donation needs, career opportunities, and much more happenings around the Metro Denver area. However, she does prefer to leave out political issues.

You can subscribe to Laura’s list for free, and contributions to her list are also free. Subscribing is easy. Just email her at ldean@hollandhart.com and she will promptly add you to her list. Blood Drive in Parker

Parker Nutrition, The Daily Shake is hosting a blood drive with Bonfils on July 28th from 10:00am to 11:40am and 1:00pm to 3:30pm. Bonfils is expecting an increase in demand for blood during the DNC and needs your donations.

Greyhounds Needing a Home

A couple weeks ago you many have seen the article in the paper on the Greyhound race track in Commerce City closing. In that article they mentioned that the dogs would need new homes. Well, now I’m receiving emails about the needed adoptions, no surprise.

There are a total of 250 dogs needing new homes, and local shelters do not have enough space for the unfortunate dogs. From the emai, “Retired greyhounds, or greyhounds of any type, make absolutely wonderful pets – they do very well in apartments and a large percentage of them can live comfortably with cats. Greyhounds come in many beautiful colors and coat patterns and really are very nice, pleasant animals.” I personally have been around fostered greyhound that have retired from racing, and they are remarkably low energy and well behaved dogs.

Don’t Miss the Boulder Wine Festival Tomorrow

A couple weeks ago we were in Manitou Springs for their wine festival, where they featured wines from across Colorado. We didn’t get a chance to try many wines because we brought our 1 year old beagles, Charlie and Howie, who are in training to be therapy dogs. This was there first festival environment and they did wonderfully, although Charlie was caught dipping his head in the waste bucket. They got more attention from the crowd than we were able to spend on the wine though. So we are off tomorrow, without the pups, to the Boulder Wine Festival.

I read on the festival website that wine making started on the Western Slope a century ago. Also, many vineyards were turned into orchards during prohibition. An interesting piece of state history. Now we have more than 60 wineries. Read more…

Colorado is really moving up in quality of wines. A year ago there was a blind taste test done with California wines, and Colorado won!

I’m really looking forward to Boulder’s wine fest. They’ve done a pretty amazing job of paring the wine tasting with the top local restaurants, so the experience should be flavorful. Any opportunity to head up north to Boulder is also a treat!

Protesting at the DNC

This is an excerpt of the information being distributed to employees all around the Downtown area about the DNC.

While I’m hoping no one gets hurt or no property is destroyed, I love the idea that major protests will happen in our Mile High City. I was 3 years old and living in Chicago during the 1968 DNC. I can’t believe 40 years have passed and now I live near the city where a DNC will be held, and one group, Re-create 68, is drawing on the past to protest for the future.

I can’t help but wonder how large the turnout of protesters. The city is calling for a combined total of 30,000 protesters and other visitors. This number seems low. Again, is the City of Denver anticipating protester turnout based on more recent conventions of the past ten or so years? It seems to me that issues like the environment, gas prices, war, the economy, etc are more heated this time around. But I guess all we can do is wait and see.

Gas Stations Closing or Not Selling Gas

I wasn’t surprised to find the article, “Tanks, but no thanks: Gas station owners driven off” in the Post today. There has been much talk about how gas station owners have been losing money by selling gas. I was surprised that the article focuses on gas station owners closing or not selling gas in Boston. Last week down here in Highlands Ranch, there were two gas stations close to C-470 between Sante Fe and Broadway not selling gas. So this has hit our own backyard. Anyone else encountered this in Colorado yet?

Cheers to Denver & Fort Collins for Providing Free Bike Rentals

It’s great to see city’s adopting free bike rental programs. Back in April, Fort Collins started a bike library. What a great idea! Just leave a credit card and they lend you a bike for free. The city of Denver will have 1000 bicycles available during the DNC, at strategic locations across the city. Would be encouraging to see Obama pedaling the streets of Denver between the convention center and the Pepsi Center.

With over 650 miles of trails (more than any other community across the country) and 300 days of sunshine, we should lead the country in gas free commutes.

CSU Professor Hard at Work

Sorry I’m a little behind due to a sick household, but in Tuesday’s Post I found the amusing article, Bumper Stickers Signal Hostility. Apparently a CSU professor concluded, as the result of a recent study, that people with bumper stickers on their cars are more aggressive drivers. And the more bumper stickers, the more aggressive the driver. I find the study interesting, because I have frequently driven on I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs for nearly ten years. Boy have I encountered some aggressive drivers–I don’t know how truck drivers do it! Though I can’t say I’ve noticed people with bumper stickers being more aggressive drivers, I might start paying more attention to their driving. Especially if the bumper sticker gripes about gas prices.

Jerky & Protein Bars for Our NEW Troops

The Colorado Connector, Rebekah Welch, is a woman who has devoted the last 6+ years of her career to connecting people, businesses and charities in Colorado, mainly the Metro Denver area. This generous woman now has a son in Marine Corp boot camp, and he and his new found buddies are desperate for beef jerky and protein bars. So Rebekah is on a mission to help our NEW troops get what they want and deserve. She needs to get the first donations ASAP and is in the process of planning a drop off point in the next week for the jerky and bars. She and her helpers would also be willing to pick up large donations.
